Designing of a Spreader Beam

Spreader beams convert lifting loads into compressive forces in the beam and tensile forces in the slings. Two lifting lugs on the top of the beam attach to the legs of a chain sling or synthetic sling at a particular angle designed to ensure pure compression. This uniformly distributes the weight of the load across the two slings. These slings are connected to crane and other lifting machines.

Because they use two lifting points instead of one singular lifting point, the weight of the load is distributed evenly across the beam. They are best in use for off-center load adjustments.

A spreader beam is the simplest configuration of the beam, which is used for two or more than two point lift and also a leveled lift. A spreader beam absorbs the compressive force to protect the load being lifted. It consists of lifting eyes which is attached to the spreader beam by means of welding. Its purpose is to connect the load to the beam and beam to the crane hook with the help of lifting accessories. Usually the emphasis is to design a two point lift spreader beam of a particular capacity by selecting 3 standard cross sections, Universal I Beam, Square hollow section and circular hollow section and subsequently suggesting the appropriate cross section for the spreader beam.
